Monitoring your server's resource usage helps you identify performance issues, plan upgrades, and ensure your applications have enough capacity. Right Servers Inc. provides built-in monitoring in the AutoVM control panel, and you can also monitor from the command line via SSH.
Monitoring from the Client Portal
The AutoVM control panel includes real-time resource monitoring:
- Log in to the client portal.
- Go to Services → My Services and click on your VPS service.
- Click Go to Control Panel to open the full AutoVM panel.
- Select the Statistics tab in the Access section.
The Statistics tab displays:
- RAM usage — a real-time linear chart showing memory consumption over time
- CPU usage — a real-time linear chart showing processor utilization over time
The control panel overview also shows your server's resource allocation at a glance: Memory (MB), Disk (GB), CPU (Core), and current Uptime.
Monitoring via SSH
For more detailed or point-in-time checks, connect via SSH and use these commands:
CPU and Process Monitoring
top— real-time view of running processes, CPU usage, memory, and load averagehtop— an improved, interactive version of top (install withapt install htopordnf install htop)
Memory
free -h— shows total, used, and available memory in human-readable format
Disk Usage
df -h— shows disk space usage for all mounted filesystemsdu -sh /path/*— shows size of specific directories
Understanding Load Average
The load average (shown by top and uptime) represents the average number of processes waiting for CPU time over the last 1, 5, and 15 minutes. As a general rule:
- A load equal to your number of CPU cores means the server is at full capacity
- A load consistently above your core count indicates the server is overloaded
Upgrading Your Resources
If monitoring shows your server consistently running near capacity, you may need more resources. You can view your current allocation in the control panel overview. To upgrade, open a support ticket from the client portal or contact support@rightservers.com to discuss upgrade options for your service.
