As a Right Servers Inc. client with root access to your VPS or dedicated server, managing your root password is crucial for security and administrative purposes.
Finding Your Root Password
Your server's root password is available in the client portal. It is not sent via email.
- Log in to the client portal.
- Go to Services → My Services and click on your VPS or dedicated server.
- The service detail page displays an embedded control panel overview with your account information, including your username and password.
- The password field is hidden by default. Click the eye icon next to the password field to reveal it.
The portal can display your password but cannot change it. To change the root password, you must connect to your server via SSH.
Changing Your Root Password
Once connected to your server via SSH as root, you can change the password using the passwd command:
- Connect to your server via SSH as root:
ssh root@your-server-ip - Type
passwdand press Enter. - Enter your new password when prompted, then retype it for confirmation.
Security Best Practices
- Use strong passwords: Combine uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters.
- Avoid reuse: Do not use the same password across multiple servers or services.
- Change periodically: Update your root password regularly to minimize risk.
