Managing DNS Records
DNS records play a crucial role in connecting your domain to various services such as websites, email servers, and more. At Right Servers Inc., we understand the importance of managing these records efficiently.
Understanding DNS Records
DNS (Domain Name System) records are essentially mappings that link your domain name to specific services or IP addresses. They help direct traffic to the correct locations on the internet.
Common DNS Record Types
- A Record: Points a domain to an IP address, typically used for websites.
- CNAME Record: An alias that points one domain to another, often used for subdomains or content delivery networks (CDNs).
- MX Record: Specifies the mail server responsible for receiving email on behalf of your domain.
- TXT Record: Used for verification purposes and can include SPF (Sender Policy Framework) records to prevent spam.
- AAAA Record: Similar to an A record but used for IPv6 addresses.
Managing DNS Records with Right Servers
If DNS management is enabled for your domain, you can manage your DNS records directly from the client portal. Follow these steps:
- Log in to the client portal.
- Navigate to the "Domains" section.
- Select the domain you wish to manage.
- Click on "Manage DNS" or "DNS Management."
If DNS management is not enabled for your domain, you can manage your DNS records at your hosting provider, or contact support@rightservers.com to add DNS management to your domain.
Adding a New DNS Record
To add a new record:
- In the DNS management section, look for an option to add a new record.
- Select the type of record you wish to create (A, CNAME, MX, TXT, AAAA, etc.).
- Enter the name or host for your new record.
- Input the value associated with your record.
- Set a TTL (Time To Live) which determines how often DNS servers update their records.
- Save your changes.
Editing an Existing Record
To edit an existing record:
- In the DNS management section, find the record you wish to modify.
- Click on the edit or pencil icon next to the record.
- Make your desired changes (type, name/host, value, TTL).
- Save your updates.
Deleting a Record
To delete a DNS record:
- In the DNS management section, locate the record you want to remove.
- Click on the delete or trash can icon next to the record.
- Confirm that you wish to delete the record.
Understanding DNS Propagation
After making changes to your DNS records, it's essential to understand that these updates do not take effect immediately. DNS propagation is the process by which changes are distributed across the internet, and it can take up to 24-48 hours for these changes to be fully recognized globally.
Tip: Managing TTL Values
For major changes or when you need quicker updates, consider lowering your TTL values (e.g., setting them to 300) before making adjustments. This allows changes to propagate faster across the internet. After propagation is complete, you can increase the TTL value back to a standard level for better performance.
